about

The American Chestnut was the redwood of the east coast, fundamental to the landscape and economy of the region. In the late 1800s, a Chinese Chestnut tree was planted in the Bronx Botanical Gardens with a virus that spread and killed all of the American Chestnut Trees. For months, they hollowed and cracked so long and loud that you couldn't hear the person next to you. To this day, American Chestnuts can't grow taller than a sapling.

lyrics

I hear the ghost trees
shaking in the wind
hollowed by an unseen force
forced to break and bend

once there was majesty
on the eastern shore
the giants that stood there
stand there nevermore

there was always something
roasting on the fire
something in my suitcase
something that inspired

now there is nothing to trade
it dwindled away
though nothing was spent
now there is no way to no how to pay
all we were lent

I hear the ghost trees
shaking in the wind
hollowed by that single tree
sent to break and bend
